Fly with us and you will be flown by Paul Swanstrom, owner of Mountain Flying Service.
In March of 2010 I will be 55 and will have 18 years of commercial flying here in Alaska and Utah. My two main interests have been river running since 1979-1991 in Utah, Arizona and Alaska. Then changing to commercial flying starting Mountain Flying Service in 1992.
I have guided extensively on the Colorado River in Canyonlands and Grand Canyon National Parks. In 1987 thru 1991 guided in Glacier Bay National Park on the Tatshensheni and Alsek rivers.
I fell in love with flying a long time ago. Being on the river shuttles in Cessna 185's over Alaska has made me want to be a backcountry pilot. I have been doing just that, since 1992. I have flown well over 10,000 hours in and around Glacier Bay and Wrangell St. Elias National Parks. I fly with Wheel-skis on my aircraft in spring and early summer enabling us to land high up on the Snowfields on the Glaciers, which is really worth doing. I have taken climbers and skiers out to many places such as Mt Fairweather, Mt. Cook, Mt Vancouver and Mt Logan.
I fell in love with the St. Elias mountains long ago and I look forward to sharing some of my favorite spots and amazing sights with you.
My wife Amy and I have been together for 5 years and we own a log home in Haines. On our time off (Which is rare) We like to go out flying ourselves. Amy earned her private pilot certificate 2 years ago.
Our goal is to provide quality flightseeing from Haines, Skagway and Northern Southeast Alaska, while offering the safest and friendliest plane tours possible.
Size & Coverage: Glaciers are found in areas of heavy snowfall coupled with cool summer temperatures, which are primarily the coastal mountains. Although colder, the more northerly mountains in Alaska are drier and have fewer glaciers. An estimated 100,000 separate glaciers ranging in size from less than one to over 2,000 square miles cover approximately 29,000 sq mi or about 5% of Alaska's land area.
